The history of Reebok began in 1890 when Joseph William Foster, a sports enthusiast in Bolton, England, had the innovative idea of adding spikes to athletic running shoes.
This idea led to the founding of JW Foster and Sons Incorporated five years later. The company began producing shoes that quickly gained popularity among world-class athletes.
As the company expanded, it decided to change its name to something more dynamic and appealing. The grandsons of JW Foster, Joe and Jeff, discovered the word "rhebok" in a South African dictionary, referring to an antelope or gazelle that roamed the African continent. Thus, they decided to change the company's name to "Reebok" in 1958.
In the 1980s, Reebok expanded into the United States with Paul Fireman becoming the exclusive distributor. They launched the famous Reebok shoes at the price of $60 per pair, and within two years, sales increased to $1.5 million.
During that decade, the company introduced the popular Reebok Freestyle shoes, specially designed for women, earning the appreciation of many celebrities such as Mick Jagger and Jane Fonda. Additionally, the introduction of the Reebok Pump series in the 1980s, which allowed athletes to customize the fit of their shoes, elevated the company to a global level.
In the 1990s, Reebok faced challenges from Nike's competition. However, after its merger with Adidas in 2005, Reebok refocused on re-establishing itself as a "lifestyle athletic" brand, ensuring its position as a top fitness brand.
