The history of New Balance begins in 1906 when an inventor named William J. Riley, without knowing the future of his project, designed a sole with three points of support for stability and comfort.
The idea for this invention came from observing the hens in his backyard, which had perfect balance in their stride.
New Balance was born when William J. Riley created the first athletic shoes for track and field athletes in 1938, initially for the Brown Bag Harriers athletic club.
The first athletic spikes were made from kangaroo leather, which was durable yet lightweight for the time.
In 1960, the company introduced the first pair of athletic shoes designed to accommodate different foot widths, a pioneering move.
Jim Davis, the current owner of New Balance, acquired the company in 1972, a significant day coinciding with the Boston Marathon.
In 1976, the iconic 320, the first New Balance athletic shoe designed with the characteristic "N" on the side, was awarded the title of the best running shoe by "Runner's World."
New Balance's most beloved design, the 574, first appeared in 1988. The series started as running shoes in the same year and evolved into one of the most famous sneakers worldwide.
With over 110 years of rich history filled with awards, emotion, and innovation, New Balance continues to design pioneering products with groundbreaking cushioning and fitting technologies for the world's best athletes.
With an eye on evolution and the belief that "now" belongs to us, the future looks bright for those who follow their unique path, as the New Balance emblem shines on the world's biggest stages and most popular events.
