Adidas today is the largest manufacturer of athletic goods in Europe and the second-largest in the world. It was founded in 1949 by Adolf "Adi" Dassler and is one of the leading and most recognizable companies in the sports and fashion industry.
The distinctive three stripes on clothing and shoes, as well as the iconic "trefoil" logo, are among the longest-standing and most widely recognized trademarks.
Adolf "Adi" Dassler, the son of a poor German family, began as a cobbler in a war-torn Germany after World War I. His passion, as a devoted track and field runner enthusiast, was to create the perfect athletic shoe that would protect athletes from injuries and improve their performance.
In 1920, at the age of just 20, he made the first pair of track and field training shoes in his mother's laundry room. Four years later, along with his brother, Rudolf, he founded Gebruder Dassler OHG, which employed 12 workers, mainly family members, and produced shoes for soccer, tennis, and running. From the beginning, Dassler placed a strong emphasis on the performance and safety of the shoes. For this reason, he met with doctors, coaches, and athletes, carefully listening to them in an effort to design the perfect shoe.
The Dasslers recognized early on the value of having top athletes wear their shoes in major sports events, such as the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup. The beginning of this was in the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, where nearly half of the athletes wore Dassler's shoes.
The success of Jesse Owens later confirmed and enhanced the good reputation of Dassler's shoes. Soon, countless letters from national team coaches from around the world arrived at the two brothers' office, asking them to send the shoes they produced. The business of the two brothers skyrocketed, and their company was selling 200,000 pairs a year until the start of World War II.
However, the war dealt a powerful blow not only to the sales of athletic shoes but also to the relationship between the two brothers. The two men had fundamentally different personalities, and a simple misunderstanding was enough to change their destinies completely.
In 1948, the two pioneers of athletic footwear separate their ways. Adi Dassler founded Adidas on August 18, 1949 (the same day he trademarked the three stripes on the shoes). Rudolf Dassler founded Ruda (later renamed Puma), using his own initials as the name and adopting the iconic leaping cat logo, symbolizing power and speed.
In 1963, Adidas began producing soccer balls, and four years later, they ventured into manufacturing athletic clothing. In 1972, they became the official supplier for the Olympic Games in Munich.
