The history of Vans begins in March 1966 in Anaheim, California when two brothers, Paul and Jim Van Doren, along with their partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, opened their company, the Van Doren Rubber Company.

The company introduced a completely different business model compared to what was known at the time: they produced and delivered custom shoe orders placed by customers on the same day.
The first #44 Deck shoes, which are now collectors' items, were a type of sneakers made from fabric and rubber and were the company's first public offering.

The secret to the initial success of Vans shoes was their quality, in which the company's founders never compromised. Several years later, when the company's accountant told Paul Van Doren that six out of ten stores were in the red, he opened ten more, persisting that quality would lead to the company's success.

Simultaneously, the company was custom-making women's and men's Vans shoes. This marked the beginning of the company's connection with the skateboarding movement. In the early 1970s, legends of the sport and pioneer skateboarders like Tony Alva, Jay Adams, and Stacy Peralta started using Van Doren's shoes due to their excellent grip.

One trend influenced and favored the other. Alva and Peralta were constantly asking for improvements to their shoes, which were wearing out more quickly on the heel, toes, and ankles. Vans continued to evolve its models and gained popularity and sales. In the 1980s, three more classic models were added to the company's collection: Vans Old Skool, Classic Slip-On, and Sk8-Hi.

In addition to skateboarders, Vans found an unexpected "ally" in the emerging Sean Penn, who wore a pair of Old Skool slip-ons in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." The movie was about the coming-of-age of a teenage surfer who struggled in school, so many young people of the time identified with Penn's character.

In recent years, Vans sneakers have become very popular and have surpassed other major brands. Old Skool and Classic Slip-On have become for the new generation what Nike Air Jordan, Converse All-Star, or Adidas Stan Smith were for today's forty-somethings.
