Kihachiro Onitsuka, living in post-war Japan, believed that promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports was essential to uplift the spirit and morale of Japanese youth. In 1949, he founded the company Onitsuka Co., starting with just four employees and a small office.
Onitsuka's first major endeavor was to revolutionize basketball shoes. He created the legendary Tiger Onitsuka shoe, inspired by an octopus he observed while eating. Noticing the octopus's powerful grip, he realized that by mimicking its sole shape with rubber, he could create a basketball shoe that could achieve the necessary traction. The shoe was worn by the Japanese Olympic basketball team, paving the way for the development of a global athletic brand.
At the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, the brand had already achieved worldwide success, and Onitsuka Tiger shoes dominated among elite athletes and the general public.
However, a significant challenge emerged as well. Nike, formerly known as Blue Ribbon Sports and based in Oregon, which had been a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger shoes in the United States since the early 1960s, won a lawsuit giving Nike the right to sell the Tiger Cortez under its own label.
In the following years, a fierce battle unfolded as the two companies faced intense competition, and the sports apparel market expanded beyond sports.
In 1977, the company's name was changed to ASICS, derived from the Latin aphorism "Anima Sana in Corpore Sano," which translates to "a sound mind in a sound body." This philosophy became the core of the entire company.
Today, ASICS is one of the largest athletic footwear and apparel companies. Its commitment to top-notch craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the application of high-end technology have resulted in the design and production of products that meet the highest standards.
