In 1984, Nike was in search of a prominent NBA player to wear their shoes with hopes of challenging Adidas' dominance in the market.
They eventually chose a promising rookie, Michael Jordan, to design their iconic collection of footwear. At the time, Jordan was associated with Converse during his college basketball career and was a known fan of Adidas.
The Air Jordan wasn't the first choice; the initial proposal was for a shoe called "Michael Jordan," but Nike rejected this idea. The reason was that the company didn't want to be associated with a 21-year-old who, in their opinion, was too young to have his own shoe line. After a brief exchange of ideas, they settled on the Air Jordan to highlight the innovation of the air cushion sole.
The first model in the Air Jordan collection featured the Chicago Bulls' red and black colors. Initially, Jordan wasn't pleased with the colors and is reported to have said, "I'm not wearing that. It's the devil's colors." However, the $2.5 million five-year contract offered by Nike eventually persuaded him.
The red and black colors violated NBA rules at the time, which required athletes' shoes to be white. Each time Jordan wore them during a game, the Chicago Bulls had to pay a $5,000 fine.
That actually pleased Nike, as the attention garnered by the "forbidden" shoes significantly boosted sales. Today, certain editions of these iconic sneakers are sold online for as much as $20,000.
