In 1917, the legendary Converse All Star made its debut, destined to become a hallmark of American and global culture. Marquis M. Converse, after years of struggling due to his ill health, managed to recover and, in 1908, founded the Converse Shoe Company with $250,000. In its very first year, the company employed 350 workers and produced 4,000 pairs of winterized shoes made from processed rubber.

The newly established company displayed impressive growth, and in 1915, it manufactured its first tennis shoe.
Two years later, it launched the iconic Converse All Star, the first successful basketball shoe. All Star would go on to become the most successful athletic shoe globally, with sales exceeding 750 million pairs in 144 countries to this day.

However, the person who changed the company's fate was none other than Charles "Chuck" Taylor, an experienced basketball player.
Like other basketball players of the time who played on concrete courts, Taylor had overworked feet that were not adequately protected by the athletic shoes available at the time. In the summer of 1921, he went to Converse's Chicago branch to suggest improvements to the All Star's design. Within a year, Taylor's suggestions - which aimed for more durable shoes with better soles and ankle support through a "pillow" - had been incorporated into the All Star.
From 1923, these shoes featured Chuck Taylor's name and signature on the sides, making him the first person whose name appeared on a pair of shoes (almost 60 years before the Nike Air Jordans) and the first athlete to "endorse" a sports product.
